Elevation gain is about 600 meters from 1,117 meters to 1,717 meters above sea level. Difficulty is classified as easy to moderate, suitable for beginners with average physical fitness. The trail consists of volcanic sand and rocky path with some steep sections. Most trekkers complete the ascent in 1.5 to 2 hours. The descent takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. Children aged 7 and above can join with proper supervision. We recommend wearing closed hiking shoes and bringing a small backpack.

Pickup time varies by hotel location: Ubud area at 1:30 AM to 2:00 AM, Kintamani area at 3:00 AM to 3:30 AM, Sanur and Seminyak at 1:30 AM to 2:00 AM. Trek starts from basecamp at 3:30 AM to 4:00 AM. Sunrise at the summit occurs between 6:15 AM and 6:30 AM depending on the season. Temperature at the top ranges from 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F). Wind chill can make it feel cooler. What to bring: light jacket or fleece, long pants, closed hiking shoes. We provide headlamps and trekking poles for free.

The main mount batur trekking route starts from Toya Bungkah village, specifically at Pura Jati parking area. This is the shortest and most popular route taking 1.5 to 2 hours to summit. Alternative route from Songan village is longer (about 2.5 hours) but less crowded with different volcanic landscape views. The standard route passes through black lava fields, then continues on volcanic sand path. At the summit, you can see the active crater with steaming vents. Return is via the same path or you can request a crater rim loop if time permits. All routes are guided for safety.
